Fall Foliage Predictions for Greater Philadelphia 2024

The weather is changing in Philadelphia, with shorter, warm days and cool nights marking the first signs of autumn. But what does that mean for the fall color outlook for our area? Here’s what to expect for this season’s fall foliage report—if and when we can expect fall color to arrive in our area, plus some of our favorite places in America’s Garden Capital to see fall’s spectacular show.

What are the ideal conditions for vibrant fall color?

In general, fall color is triggered by a decrease in sunlight due to longer nights and shorter days. A wet growing season followed by an autumn with lots of sunny days, dry weather, and cold, frostless nights will produce the most vibrant palette of fall colors. This is especially true of red leaves, such as those on sugar maples and red maple trees.

The 2024 fall foliage season in the Philadelphia area is shaping up to be especially vivid due to favorable weather conditions, including a mix of cool nights and mild days.

Did you know: When fall color appears, it is actually the disappearance of chlorophyll from leaves that allows the yellow and orange pigments to be seen.

Fall foliage predictions from our experts

Our member gardens weigh-in on fall foliage predictions for the Philadelphia area:

“Although we were a bit dry earlier in the summer, we’ve gotten nice rainfall and plentiful sunshine so far in August that should let our arboretum have a beautiful fall. Peak leaf peeping time at Andalusia is late October/early November.” —Head Gardener William Fuchs and Senior Horticulturist Jenna Bachman, Andalusia Historic House, Gardens and Arboretum

“From a phenological standpoint, we are about two weeks ahead this year. July’s dry weather adds a bit of a wild card element. It will be fascinating to see what happens. Nature never disappoints!Tyler Arboretum

“Like last year, some fall color has already begun, not too far ahead of previous years. As the nights cool in the upcoming weeks, our Fall color will continue for 6-8 weeks because of the range of species within our living collection.” —Grounds for Sculpture
