Fall color is beginning its annual journey across Pennsylvania, but here in the Philadelphia region, the best of the season is still ahead. If you’re wondering where to see fall color in Philadelphia and when to plan your visit, late October through early November is shaping up to be the prime leaf-peeping window for 2026.
From brilliant maples and golden ginkgos to colorful woodland trails, the gardens and arboreta of America’s Garden Capital offer some of the best places to experience fall foliage in the Philadelphia area.
When Will Fall Color Peak in Philadelphia in 2026?
As of October 1, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) reports that fall color is just beginning to develop in southeastern Pennsylvania. Philadelphia, Montgomery, Chester and Delaware counties are still showing little change, while color is beginning to emerge farther north in Bucks County.
Red maples and birches are among the first trees beginning to turn, and DCNR predicts that peak fall color in southeastern Pennsylvania is still a few weeks away.
The 2026 Explore Fall forecast points to an especially late season in Philadelphia, with peak color expected to begin around early November in the city itself. Areas north of Philadelphia are expected to turn sooner, with locations around Bucks County and Nockamixon State Park approaching peak color in late October.
That means visitors should expect a gradual progression of color across Greater Philadelphia rather than a single peak weekend. Mid-to-late October should bring increasing color throughout the region, with some of Philadelphia’s strongest displays likely arriving in late October and early November.
Weather can still shift that timeline. Cool nights help accelerate the transition, while warm temperatures can delay it, and strong wind or heavy rain can shorten the display.
"Fall color is just beginning to appear in a few places throughout the garden. We expect fall color here to peak in mid-October, although our foliage should be fantastic throughout the month and into the beginning of November.”

Make the Most of Philadelphia’s Fall Color Season
One of the advantages of exploring fall foliage at Philadelphia-area gardens is the incredible diversity of their living collections. Different species reach peak color at different times, so there’s rarely just one weekend to experience autumn at its best.
Start exploring in October as maples, dogwoods and other early-changing trees begin to turn, then return later in the season for brilliant ginkgos, oaks and other late-autumn standouts.
And because peak foliage depends on temperature, rainfall and other weather conditions, check current conditions before heading out. The Pennsylvania DCNR publishes weekly fall foliage reports throughout the season, while Explore Fall provides an interactive forecast for tracking the progression of color.
