Dog-Friendly Public Gardens in Philadelphia

When it comes to gardens, the greater Philadelphia area boasts an impressive array of historic landscapes, vibrant floral displays, and tranquil retreats. But what if you want to enjoy these beautiful spaces with your furry companion by your side? The good news is that several gardens in America’s Garden Capital are dog-friendly! Allowing you to embark on memorable adventures with your four-legged friend. Below is our list of the most dog-welcoming gardens, where you can revel in the beauty of nature while creating lasting memories with your pup.

Appleford Estate

Leashed dogs welcome; free admission.

This historic 24-acre estate features elegant gardens, formal flower beds, picturesque terraces, and a serene pond. Dogs are welcome throughout the grounds, however be mindful that this location frequently hosts weddings, especially on weekends, April through October. Visitors are not permitted during events. Check website for current open times and days.

Laurel Hill is two historic cemeteries and a certified arboretum spanning 265 acres. Explore the collection of over 6,000 trees and shrubs representing over 700 species and cultivars. Please be respectful and keep in mind that Laurel Hill cemeteries are final sites of rest.

Offering 55 acres of green spaces, woodlands, and meadows to explore. Leashed dogs are welcome to accompany their owners as they stroll along the winding trails and discover the arboretum’s diverse plant collections. Dogs not permitted in buildings.

A verdant oasis for plants and people (and pets!) on the University of Pennsylvania campus. Walk the pathways around the vibrant biopond and peer into the lush Biology Deptartment greenhouse, you and your furry friend might even forget you’re in the city.

This 50-acre garden offers stunning views of the Schuylkill River, meadows, boat launch and dock, and woodland trails, providing a peaceful retreat where you can enjoy nature with your canine companion. Dogs are even allowed in boats on Free Boating Saturdays! (seasonal, check website for more information)

The Woodlands is a 54-acre historic cemetery and arboretum. It’s the largest open green space in West Philadelphia—offering ample tree-lined paths for you and your furry friend to roam! Please be respectful that The Woodlands is an active cemetery and visitors bury and visit their loved ones throughout the year.

Welkinweir is a 224-acre oasis of natural beauty, featuring a 55-acre arboretum and historic estate house, as well as ecologically diverse wetland, meadow, and woodland habitats. Pack a picnic and make a day of walking the 2 miles of dog-friendly trails.

Among this 216 acre arboretum is a 2.2-mile nature trail which roughly follows the perimeter of campus and historic tree collection including the Treaty Elm.
